CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Charlie Hustle, the Hit King, an all-time MLB great.

There are many ways to describe Pete Rose, but no matter how you viewed the man, there is no denying his success on the baseball diamond.

The Cincinnati Reds legend passed away at 83, Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci confirmed on Monday.

Rose, a Cincinnati native, won Rookie of the Year in 1963 when he joined the hometown Reds.

That season was the beginning of what statistically is a Hall of Fame career.

  • Three-time World Series
    • Two came with the Reds during the 1970s; He was the World Series MVP for Cincinnati in 1975
  • 17 All-Star selections
  • 1973 NL MVP
  • Gold Glove winner (1969, 1970)
  • Three batting titles

His best individual accomplishment during his playing career came when he broke Ty Cobb’s hit record.

Rose’s 4,256 hits in MLB is still the most ever.

In 1989, four years after he broke the hit record, Rose received a lifetime ban from baseball for gambling when he was the Reds manager.

Rose was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2016 and his No. 14 was retired the same year. Rose’s statue outside Great American Ball Park was dedicated in 2017.
