FC Cincinnati falls 3-2 to New York City FC
Harrison, NJ (WXIX) - With the playoffs right around the corner, FC Cincinnati failed to earn a win for the third straight match in Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to New York City FC.
The orange and blue fell behind 1-0 in the 16th minute. Mitja Ilenic scored his first MLS goal for New York City.
NYC FC built a 2-0 lead in the second half before FC Cincinnati’s Luciano Acosta cut the lead in half with a penalty kick in the 69th minute.
New York City converted on a penalty kick of their own in the 75th minute to take a 3-1 lead.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the game was stopped around the 86th minute after a homophobic slur was reportedly directed at FC Cincinnati’s Luciano Acosta.
Corey Baird added a stoppage-time goal for FCC in the 96th minute to make it a 3-2 game.
Despite more than 15 minutes of stoppage time, FC Cincinnati were unable to tie the game.
FCC have lost back-to-back games for the first time since August 24.
The loss keeps FC Cincinnati in third place in the Eastern Conference. With two games remaining in the regular season, FC Cincinnati will enter the postseason no lower than the third seed.
Their final regular season match at TQL Stadium will be Saturday, October 5 against Orlando City.
They’ll end the season on the road against the Philadelphia Union on October 19.
