CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Cincinnati’s Department of Transportation and Engineering (DOTE) has implemented changes in traffic light timing for the I-471/Daniel Carter Beard Bridge detours.

According to a traffic study by the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments (OKI), on average 33,000 vehicles per day moved to nearby bridges, with the biggest increase being on the Taylor Southgate and Brent Spence bridges.

In a release on Nov. 14, The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) says that DOTE has adjusted traffic signals at key intersections.

Deputy Director of Communications, Ben Breuninger, tells FOX19 NOW that the adjusted traffic signals are along these roads:

  • Second Street
  • Pete Rose Way
  • Broadway
  • Riverside Drive

DOTE says that they will continue to monitor traffic patterns and make adjustments as needed.

The release also says that the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has installed new controllers at intersections throughout Covington that will help monitor traffic so the cabinet can make signal changes as necessary.

Newport has also made changes to improve traffic flow, according to Jake Ryle with KYTC.

The signal timing has been adjusted at five signals:

  • Third Street/Monmouth Street
  • Third Street/Saratoga Street
  • Third Street/Washington Avenue
  • Washington Avenue/Dave Cowens Drive
  • Dave Cowens Drive/Park Avenue

Ryle says the changes will be in place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. during the weekday afternoon commute.

As the region makes adjustments, ODOT advises that drivers plan routes in advance and allow extra travel time, especially during rush hour.

The cause of the fire that started underneath the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge is still under investigation.
