CINCINNATI (WXIX) - FC Cincinnati’s Nick Hagglund sustained a serious injury, resulting in hospitalization, during Sunday night’s match against Atlanta United FC.

The 32-year-old center back sustained two broken ribs, according to an FC Cincinnati spokesperson. One of those ribs was out of position, which caused one of his lungs to collapse.

Hagglund underwent a procedure for his lung that night and will undergo another one for his rib fractures, the spokesperson said Monday.

Hagglund’s injury happened in the 10th minute of the first half.

Atlanta United’s Emmanuel Latte Lath was going toward a ball, received by FC Cincinnati center back Matt Miazga. As Hagglund sprinted back to defend the zone, video shows Lath raising his elbow and giving what appears to be a shove.

Hagglund fell to the ground but stayed down on the pitch in visible pain, holding his side.

The referee of the match eventually saw Hagglund and stopped the clock, but did not call the play a foul.

By the 14th minute, FC Cincinnati subbed Teenage Hadebe in for Hagglund, who was transported to the hospital.

FOX19 NOW reached out to FCC regarding Hagglund’s injury and what the rest of the season could look like for him. We are waiting to hear back.

This is the Cincinnati native’s second major injury since June 2024 when he broke his fibula - a season-ending injury.

FC Cincinnati ended up losing to Atlanta United 4-2.
