How to find a tornado shelter near you
CINCINNATI (WXIX) - A new tool is helping improve tornado safety by showing people where they can find a tornado shelter nearby.
Dr. Craig Ceecee, the founder of findyourtornadoshelter.com, says there are now 2,200 locations on the shelter map and that number continues to climb.
He says the site is still a “work in progress” and he needs help adding more public tornado shelters to his map.
“My first survey, which was actually done in the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, asked ‘If you could find an app or map that had locations of tornado shelters, would you use one if there was one available?’, said Dr. Ceecee. ”The vast majority of respondents said they would."
At the top of the website’s main page is an interactive map. Each icon on the map represents registered public tornado shelter.
The color of the icon represents how many people can fit in the shelter You can click on the icon for the shelter’s details and addresses.
Dr. Ceecee encourages you to contact him directly if you want to register your business’s tornado shelter on the website. His contact information is at the bottom of the website’s main page.
