Cincinnati Country Day School receives 513 Green Certification
513 Green Certification is a sustainability certification through Hamilton County
CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Cincinnati Country Day School joins three other Hamilton County schools to be 513 Green Certified, a free certification that recognizes the school’s sustainability practices.
Fifth-grade science teacher Rick Schoeny spearheaded the application process for the school. He says one of their main practices is having students involved in keeping trash out of the landfill.
“All of our food waste from our dining terrace, as we call our cafeteria, goes to GoZero,” said Schoeny. “We compost all of that, and then, we’ve been doing traditional recycling for years. And within the last number of years, we’ve expanded into beyond-the-curb recycling.”
Schoeny says beyond-the-curb recycling is the recycling of specific items that can’t be recycled traditionally. This includes batteries, candy wrappers, and bottle caps.
Rob Zimmerman, the head of school for Cincinnati Country Day School, isn’t surprised to hear of the certification. He says the campus has a long legacy of environmental stewardship.
“It is foundational to who we are and always have been at Country Day,” said Zimmerman. “That’s why it’s not a side project or one-time initiative. This is really core to who we conceive of ourselves as a school community.”
The 513 Green Certification process helps your school or business implement practical and affordable sustainability practices.
