Vet Center uses mobile unit to reach Butler County veterans
Dayton Vet Center brings counseling services directly to Hamilton to connect with area veterans
HAMILTON, Ohio (WXIX) - A mobile unit from the Dayton Vet Center is traveling to Butler County to reach veterans who may not know about available services.
The Vet Center deployed a mobile billboard unit to Hamilton to alert veterans about counseling and support services available in their area.
“We offer individual counseling, individual and group counseling to veterans, military members which includes like reserve and guard, and then we can do some like family and stuff support as well,” said Erin Foster, Vet Center director for the Dayton Vet Center.
Bridging the gap between VA facilities
The Dayton Vet Center operates from its main office in Kettering but travels to areas where the Dayton and Cincinnati VA facilities overlap.
“We are considered one of the best kept secrets of the VA, which is not a good thing,” Foster said. “We have to talk about ourselves and get people to know what we do.”
Foster said the Vet Centers are not as well known because they are not part of the VA Medical Center system, though they are part of the larger VA organization. Not all Vet Centers are located close to a VA facility.
Supporting veterans with PTSD
During a recent visit, a group of veterans dealing with PTSD issues from Vietnam and other conflicts met at the Butler County Veterans Service Commission on High Street.
Foster said PTSD is the most common issue the center addresses.
“It can be a sound, it can be a smell, it can be a noise, it can be a lot of different things that can trigger something that’s back there in your subconscious that maybe you don’t even realize until you run across it and then there you are again, kind of having that memory or that event come forward to you,” Foster said.
The center provides support through both group sessions and individual counseling.
