‘Dancing in the rain’: Foundation helps families find joy amid serious childhood medical challenges
VIRGINIA (Aging Untold) — A foundation born from grief is now a lifeline for families going through serious childhood medical challenges.
Sara Knight founded the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation in memory of her daughter, Julia. The organization provides care packages, wishes and encouragement to families during long hospital journeys.
“Life is hard sometimes, but if you get caught up in the hard part, you’ll miss it,” Knight said. “She taught us to just dance in the rain in the midst of all the storms.”
‘Turning pain into purpose’
The foundation refers to the children it serves as “Rain Dancers.”
Knight said the work is rooted in personal connection.
“It’s such an honor to come inside of a family’s inner circle and grieve with them, celebrate with them, be there for the hard days,” she said. “All because Julia connected us to them.”
Aging Untold gerontologist Sam Cradduck said support led by someone with lived experience carries particular weight.
“It’s really hard to know what somebody needs unless you’ve been in their shoes,” Cradduck said. “She’s been there — she’s had a child that was ill, who succumbed to that, and she lost her, and she’s turned that pain into purpose and she’s helping other families get through that.”
A message for caregivers
Cradduck said caregivers should give themselves permission to find moments of joy alongside the difficulty.
“Celebrating the milestones, celebrating the good, celebrating the birthdays, celebrating the moments and the laughter — that’s the way to go," Cradduck said. “There’s enough tears in caregiving. Find the moments that you can cherish and have fun with them.”
The Sweet Julia Grace Foundation said it has helped hundreds of families across Virginia and West Virginia.
“They will teach you how to be brave and courageous and resilient,” Knight said. “There’s nothing like a Rain Dancer.”
