Bengals win preseason opener; Highlights, game recap
CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Bengals football returns with a 16-14 win over the Detroit Lions.

Postgame
4th Quarter
The final quarter gets underway with the Bengals having the ball and a 13-6 lead over the Lions.
Cincinnati ends up getting another Evans McPherson field goal, this one from 41 yards.
Bengals now up 16-6 over Detroit.
Cincinnati’s defense forces the Lions to punt again.
Former St. Xavier standout Sean Clifford is now in at quarterback for the Bengals.
The Bengals punt the ball away a few plays later.
Lions have the ball past midfield with under two minutes to go in the game.
A 24-yard passing touchdown from the Lions makes the score 16-12 Bengals.
Detroit goes for the 2-point attempt and converts. Cincinnati now leads 16-14 with 1:28 left in the game.
The Bengals recover the ensuing onside kick attempt.
3rd Quarter
The Bengals offense, led by all backups, begins the second half with the ball and a 10-6 lead.
Cincinnati’s offense goes three plays before punting the ball away.
The Bengals defense forces the Lions to punt once again.
Johnson leads an impressive drive, getting the Bengals into the red zone.
A third down sack by the Lions forces Cincinnati into another field goal. Evan McPherson’s kick is good.
Bengals up 13-6.
Despite giving up a long rush, the Bengals defense does not yield any points to the Lions on the drive.
Bengals back on offense.
The Cincinnati offense is driving as the quarter comes to an end.
2nd Quarter
Joe Flacco, now in at quarterback, opens the second with the ball and a 3-0 lead.
The second quarter opens with a pass to the star of training camp - Colbie Young.
Flacco connects with Young for 20 yards and a Bengals first down.
What was an impressive drive ended with zero points.
Kendall Milton fumbles the ball deep in Lions territory and Detroit recovers. Lions back on offense.
Cincinnati’s defense avenges Milton two plays later.
With the rain coming down, the Lions put the ball on the ground. The Bengals top draft pick, Cashius Howell, recovers the fumble.
Cincinnati takes over on the Lions’ 7-yard line.
Two plays later, Flacco finds rookie tight end Jack Endries for the touchdown. Bengals now up 10-0.

Journeyman quarterback Josh Dobbs comes in for the Lions.
Detroit is unable to make anything of it and punts the ball away following a Chris Jenkins sack.
Josh Johnson now leads the Bengals offense out. Flacco’s day is done.
Cincinnati goes three and out.
Dobbs and the Lions managed to get on the board with a field goal.
Bengals now lead 10-3 right before halftime.
The Bengals offense squanders a big kickoff return. Cincinnati is unable to get any points on the board before halftime.
Lions take over in good position and after a run are in field goal range.
Detroit makes a 52-yard field goal to cut the Bengals to 10-6.
1st Quarter
Fans don’t have to wait long to get to see the big offseason addition - Dexter Lawrence. Cincinnati begins the game on defense after winning the coin toss and choosing to defer.
The Lions wasted no time and in less than three minutes were in the Bengals territory.
Jordan Battle comes up with a huge interception to halt the Detroit drive.
Burrow and the offense take over.
Burrow connects with Ja’Marr Chase on his first pass of the preseason to get Cincinnati a first down.
A sack a couple of plays later put the Bengals in a long third down they could not convert.
Lions back on offense.
The Bengals defense returns to the field but without Lawrence, DJ Turner and Jonathan Allen.
The Lions go three-and-out, punting the ball back to the Bengals.
Burrow, Chase and Higgins are getting a second series. The big three are back on the field.
Cincinnati gets the short passing game going with the rain starting to fall at Paycor.
The Bengals have a pair of first downs and are past midfield on the drive.
The drive stalled, but the Bengals come away with three points on an Evan McPherson 56-yard field goal.
The Lions once again drive down the field into field goal range.
Their drive ends after the Lions could not convert a fourth and three.
Cincinnati’s offense takes the field with a change at quarterback.
Burrow’s day is done as Joe Flacco comes in.
