CINCINNATI (WXIX) - One of FC Cincinnati’s best defenders, Matt Miaza, is out for the rest of the 2024 season after sustaining a major injury, according to the FCC communications team.

Miazga, 28, underwent a “successful” surgery recently in New York after he was injured in the June 15 match against the San Jose Earthquakes, the team said in a press release.

They say he had to have a reconstructive operation performed on his meniscus and posterior (backside) cruciate ligament, which is the part of the knee that ensures the tibia does not move behind the femur, according to the National Library of Medicine.

In the video posted by Major League Soccer, Miazga was hustling back to defend the goal as a San Jose player made his way down the field.

The center back eventually caught up to his opponent, and while attempting to slide to block the attempted shot on the left side of the field, he slid feet-first into the goal post. The metal pole landed between his legs and banged his knees, based on the video.

“Miazga will be placed on the Season-Ending Injury List and will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 MLS Season,” FCC wrote in the press release.

However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel for FCC fans.

The club says Miazga is expected to rejoin the team in preseason training in 2025.

“Everyone at the club wishes Matt all the best in his recovery and we look forward to his successful return next season,” the team wrote.

Miazga has made 68 appearances on the pitch for FC Cincinnati since he signed with them in August 2022. He was also named MLS Defender of the Year in 2023 and listed on the MLS All-Star roster last season.
