(CNN) – Monday marks the anniversary of an engineering feat: the beginning of construction on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
Workers first began clearing more than 3 million cubic feet of dirt on January 5, 1933, to build the bridge’s foundation.
The bridge was completed in 1937.
It stretches 1.7 miles, making it the longest spanning bridge in the world at the time.
The day before the bridge officially opened, more than 200,000 people walked, ran and roller skated over the span.
Now, officials said about 10 million people visit the bridge every year.
