CINCINNATI (WXIX) - A U.S. Army veteran received a new roof this week through Owens Corning’s Roof Deployment Project, with At Your Service Roofing completing the installation hours before heavy showers arrived.

A six-man crew secured the new roof in a matter of hours for Army veteran and tank commander John Humphrey.

“We’ve actually donated over 775 roofs across the country to veterans in need,” said Sarah Fagerman, area sales manager for Owens Corning. “They provide the labor, we provide the material to give back to our veterans for serving our country.”

David Miller, site supervisor for At Your Service Roofing, said the project was meaningful even after 18 years in the business.

“It feels great to help the ones that helped us for so many years and it’s just an overwhelming feeling,” Miller said.

Humphrey trained soldiers in harsh desert conditions before they shipped off to fight in Kuwait.

“Lots of guys had to go over to Kuwait, but I stayed here and trained guys in the desert in Fort Mojave, California — which some might say is worse than Kuwait,” Humphrey said. “But hats off to our brothers and sisters over in the Middle East.”

Humphrey said his wife’s grandfather was a POW in World War II and his son is currently in the military.

“We know at least four generations of our family have been happy to serve and give back,” he said.

“To be able to give them a gift of one of the most expensive parts of their home is very rewarding,” Fagerman said.

Veterans who need a new roof or contractors interested in joining Owens Corning’s Roof Deployment mission can reach out to the company directly.
