Back-to-School bucket list: Tips for making the first day back easier

CINCINNATI (WXIX) - As students prepare to return to class, Cincinnati Mom Collective has put together a back-to-school checklist designed to help families stay organized and manage costs.

Courtney Snow, who leads the Cincinnati Mom Collective, said clothing is one area where expenses can quickly add up.

“Get it organized and assess those needs ahead of time,” Snow said. “What have they grown out of? What have they worn? What are we donating or throwing away? And then getting that inventory ahead of time of what pieces do you actually need — and what sizes — so that when you do shop, whether it’s online or in store, you already have your plan and you know about how much you’re going to spend.”

Snow said the key to a less stressful back-to-school season comes down to preparation.

“A lot of it just comes down to simple planning ahead and preparation, which is a good tool for a student to have as well,” she said.

She also recommended involving children in the process, including planning meals in advance.

“It saves mom’s sanity, but it is good lessons to instill in them — like what do we do ahead of time,” Snow said. “Even planning ahead for snacks and lunches, make the lunches the night before, and then something else you can do is just put the whole lunch box in the fridge and then they can just grab it on the way out.”

Snow also suggested families set up a shared calendar — either a large physical one posted in a common area or a digital version — so everyone stays informed as schedules fill up.
