CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Colerain High School is entering the upcoming football season with new safety measures after fights and dangerous incidents broke out at games last season.

The school is emphasizing supervision and making sure people are there for the right reasons.

“I think we’ll start to see, and we have started to see more schools doing this,” Colerain High School’s Athletic Director Matt Stoinoff said.

Stoinoff said that for the last four or five years, the school has been a bit tighter about who is allowed to attend games.

Any student who doesn’t attend Colerain High School or the visiting team’s school must receive prior approval from him or the building’s principal, and middle schoolers need to be with an adult.

“They don’t have to hold their parent’s hand and go to the restroom or concessions, but at least to get into the stadium they need to be with an adult,” Stoinoff said.

In the Tri-State, we’ve seen games be the center of serious incidents, from fights to shootings.

Stoinoff said they adopted a policy after students from other schools caused trouble at their games.

“Their intentions were not to watch the game, and we are not a babysitting service; this isn’t recess. They’ll come and want to start trouble or be there for something else,” he said.

Stoinoff said it’s caused a marked improvement for the atmosphere of their football games.

“Spectators, parents, community members, everybody seems to enjoy it, and it’s a fun place to be on a Friday night, and Cincinnati high school football is special,” he said.

Their first game is against LaSalle High School on Friday. Stoinoff said students need to bring their school ID, and if they’re from another school, email him for approval.
