Veterans getting chance to return to the skies with Lunken Airport Days
CINCINNATI (WXIX) - A World War II veteran made his return to the sky in an unforgettable opportunity that more will soon get to experience.
Lee Smith knows his way around a B-25 bomber, an aircraft used in WWII.
“It was a fantastic airplane,” Smith described. “It was multi-use.”
Smith served in the Army Air Corps.
While he flew on many planes, he never had the chance to fly on a B-25 until last year at 99 years old on a flight coordinated by Honor Flight Bluegrass.
Now, at age 100, Smith finds himself on another flight.
“It was really exciting for me, and uh, very rewarding, and it will be equally rewarding again, it will be every time,” Smith said. “I will never pass up a chance to go flying.”

In a few weeks, Tri-State community members will get the same opportunity Smith did.
On Aug. 31, veterans and community members will have the chance to ride in a B-25 bomber as part of Lunken Airport Days.
Lunken Airport Days is part open house, part fundraiser.
It raises money and awareness for Honor Flight Tri-State and other veterans’ groups.
The two-day event starts Aug. 30.
