Louisiana native Tisha Powell joined the WAFB 9NEWS team in August 2021. She anchors 9News at 4 and 5 p.m. and serves as a co-host and national correspondent for Gray Media’s weekday news magazine show, InvestigateTV+.
Born on Bayou Lafourche in Thibodaux, Tisha is a graduate of H.L. Bourgeois High School and Loyola University New Orleans, where she earned a degree in broadcast journalism with a minor in political science. She also holds a Master of Science in Communication and Leadership from Purdue University. An Emmy and Edward R. Murrow Award-winning journalist, Tisha is recognized for her commitment to impactful storytelling, particularly stories that highlight resilience, community, health advancements, and the human spirit.
Throughout her career, Tisha has balanced the demands of journalism with life as a military spouse, navigating multiple relocations while continuing to advance her work in major markets across the country.
She began her career as a reporter and producer at WCBI in Columbus, Mississippi before moving to WDSU in New Orleans where she traveled twice to Honduras to cover the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. Later, in San Antonio, she joined KABB as an anchor and health reporter, covering major stories including the escape of the Texas Seven and the San Antonio Spurs’ 2003 NBA Championship.
Before returning home to Louisiana, Tisha spent 17 years as a main anchor and reporter at WTVD in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina. During that time, she reported on some of the nation’s most significant events, including Hurricane Katrina, the UNC Tar Heels’ Final Four run, the Carolina Panthers’ journey to Super Bowl 50, and the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia. She has interviewed prominent figures such as Governor Roy Cooper, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Dr. Jill Biden. In a testament to her adventurous spirit, Tisha also jumped with the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team in Laurinburg, North Carolina to promote Army recruitment.
Tisha and her husband, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, are the proud parents of two daughters. She is a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and is actively involved in the National Association of Black Journalists, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and The Baton Rouge Chapter of The Links, Incorporated.
